Every believer seeks to knowledge of God’s will about himself, others and the world in general. He knows that God is Omniscient and Omnipresent Personality, endowed with infinite wisdom and great love to His children; He wants only the best for His children.
Many people believe that the recording of man’s purpose and actual behavior has been being made in the sky before his birth. Talking about his life, David the Psalmist wrote: “in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. (Psalms 139:16)”.
Should we know about the will of God about us or it is better for us just to go through life relying only on our aspirations?
Where to get knowledge about the will of God
From ancient times until today we hear the voice of the wise that reveal the eternal mysteries of existence that relate to every person. Many of them are written in the Bible pages which lead us to an understanding of the divine and the human.
The great prophet Jeremiah, who received visions from God himself, wrote: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end”. (Jeremiah 29:11).
The prophet’s statement confirms people’s faith in the fact that God does care how people live. He wishes us goodness and wants to open His good will.
The prophet wrote in another place: “Call unto me – and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” (Jeremiah 33: 3). This gives us hope for what is possible to see what our life should be. So, how should I seek such knowledge and ask for it?
How can I find out God’s will?
There are following ways to find out the will of God.
- Prayer. Believers have a great opportunity to turn to God asking what He wants from them. There is a beautiful prayer for knowledge and execution of God’s will. It sounds like this:
“God, the Father in heaven! In the name of Jesus Christ show me the way on which I should go! Give me to know Thy will, help me to understand Your ways. Give me humility and fear of the Lord that I may learn Your ways. Help me and teach me to fulfill Your will!
Give me a strong desire to achieve the goals that I have to achieve by Your will! Give me the aspiration to fulfill Your will from my heart, with diligence. Give me Your incentives and wish for fulfilling Your will. Keep me from sin – inaccurate fulfillment of Your will, and help me to follow You in obedience”.
When we pray in this way, God certainly will answer us through some signs, or maybe He will send us new thoughts and ideas, how we should do in different situations.
- Advice of wise men. Very often we can get an answer to a prayer for cognition and heart of God’s will, listening to what wise men say about our situation. It is a kind of sign, a hint for those who really want to know what to do.
Our parents and friends can be wise men, in whom we have no doubt. Even priests can be wise men because they are immersed in the spiritual world and can learn from it much more than ordinary people.
The main thing for us who is looking for not only wisdom but God’s will, to be attentive to how people, which give us advice, able to see the Divine Providence in our life.
- Example of Jesus Christ. Christian tradition says that one day God Himself or His Son came down to earth in human form to show people an example of how to live. He wanted us to seek perfection in thought and deed. How does the example of Christ can help us to know God’s will?
- Bible. The Bible gives us certain tips, recommendations and even direct command of God for many questions of morality, the choice of good or evil and many everyday situations.
For example, the 10 commandments have come to our attention, which speak of the prohibition of killing, stealing, adultery, lying, and others. Therefore, to find out whether we do right today and what “God Himself would advise us to do” – is quite correct to refer to this book whish sheds light on many worrying us questions.
- Conscience and common sense. In addition, there are also conventional truths in our hearts. We can hear the voice of conscience that tells us what is good and what is bad.
However, unfortunately, the conscience is not always a reliable channel through which the messages could arrive to us from heaven because a man can silence his voice of conscience by his choice and willed decision. In that case, the conscience will talk quieter and less.
It is much better to listen to ourselves to know if we are on the right way. In addition, our common sense together with a conscience can be a good bit of help to us. We are created for a reason with a phenomenal ability to think, to reason and make decisions.
That is why we must be responsible for our actions, otherwise when we shift the responsibility on to someone else even to God, it does not lead to anything good.
How to understand what God wants from us?
You agree that the most right we can determine what God wants from us, at the same time using several sources of cognition of God’s will. If we use an only one source, we can easily make a mistake.
Should we, for example, pray for finding up of God’s will and search directly opposite response in the signs and the circumstances of our life, if the Bible and conscience say definitely what we need to do?
Of course, God would not conflict to His commandments which are given earlier. That is why people who want to seriously seek God’s will, should explore the Bible in search of answers to their questions, and also should pray hard, ask wise people about advice and talk themselves what way they should choose.
You might think that we are not free to do anything with our life. God is Almighty, He will do everything Himself. But this position is not correct, as well as it’s opposite, which is: I am the owner of my life; I don’t even want to know who has thought of about my life. Yes, we have the right to choose one or another.
In fact, God has given every person the original freedom of action so that only a man can make a decision what to do: according to the commandments and God’s will or against it, also can listen to his conscience and the advices of wise men or ignore them. Of course, first we must learn to understand that “God Himself advises us,” and then to decide how we should do.
However, our life can be much brighter and we will be much happier if we find our true destiny and find out what God wants from us. For this we need to learn to listen to what heaven tell us and notice certain signs which are sent from above in our life.
